Towns Copeland

Copeland

Copeland was once a thriving goldfield town. Gold was first discovered in the Copeland district by two cedar getters (Saxby and Barrett) in July 1876, at Back Creek. Miners flocked there and the population increased to 1100 people, of whom 800 were miners. There were 51 mines operating, with the last mine (Mountain Maid) closing as a major gold mine in 1878. The mines produced about 11 tons of gold. By 1887 mining had almost ceased.

alt

Timber was extensively cleared, with much of it used in mining operations. Regeneration of the area over the last century has been incredible, and the area was declared state forest in 1968 and now is included in a flora reserve.

These days Copeland is better known for the State Conservation Area and its largest stand of easily accessible dry rainforest in the Gloucester district.
