PatersonThe village of Paterson is the earliest recorded settlement in the Dungog Shire after Colonel William Paterson surveyed the land in 1801; the first land grant was in 1821 to William Dunn. Susannah Ward surrendered 90 acres of her estate in 1832 for the purpose of establishing a town. Although Paterson was the Hunter Region's third town site to be surveyed (in 1833 after Newcastle and Maitland), it was not proclaimed as a town until 1885.
The town became an important trading post for boats from Newcastle and Morpeth, and a market centre for farmers from north of the town to bring produce. Produce such as citrus fruits, tobacco, grains, grapes and wine was transported from the fertile Allyn and Paterson Valleys to Newcastle and Maitland. Many early settlers were Scots and hence a Presbyterian Church preceded an Anglican establishment. Indeed St Ann's, built in the late 1830s, is said to be the oldest Presbyterian Church on mainland Australia. Paterson today is a small rural area with many points of regional heritage significance. A small but vibrant village centre provides basic services to the community and a convenient local hub for the students and staff of the nearby CB Alexander, Tocal College. What to do in Paterson:Paterson offers many activities and attractions for you to participate in while in the region.
