Vacy

Vacy is thought to be the first private town established in NSW and came into being on the estate of the Cory family, originally taken up in 1824. Most of the early buildings were erected for John Cory’s tenants. During the 1830’s and 40’s the Cory family established the first church, school and post office and Vacy also boasted tobacco and arrowroot factories. A blacksmith, bakery, butcher, general store, cattle saleyards, and creamery were established along the strip and the original buildings now provide visitors with a brief glimpse of the past.

In 1927 the town was sold in 50 lots, including homes, shops, the hotel, dairy farms and orchards. Its ribbon development along Gresford Road, as opposed to the traditional grid layout, is a testament to its origins as a private town and the church, school of arts and other buildings have been carefully preserved by a caring community.

Vacy is still a tiny village which nevertheless has retained many of its original buildings and facilities. With small residential estates being developed in the area the population is rising steadily and the village green has established itself as a hub for community activities and fund raising events throughout the year. Sporting activities continue to flourish with the oval hosting competitions for all ages throughout each traditional sporting season.
